A cultural, nature and entomological trip in northern Thailand together with Ulrich Scheidt (Natural History Museum Erfurt, Germany) and friends. The weather on this winter was very cool with 5-10 degree Celsius at nighttime and the sun has to be proud of in the morning, very late, because the morning fog.

If I travel to Chiang Mai I see on the rice fields many Openbill Stork. The first day’s we spend time in and around Chiang Mai and visit some historic temple and the Doi Suthep Mountain.

Then we spent some day on Doi Pha Hom Pok at a altitude of about 2000 meter high.

The temperature at nighttime was very cool, about 6-7 degree Celsius but some very interesting moth’s came to the light trap. One Sphingidae species, Pentateucha curiosa (Swinhoe 1908) and one Geometridae species Pseudobiston pinratanai (Inoue 1994). Both species fly only in the wintertime. On the day we found some interesting amphibians, one salamander species, Tylototriton verrucosus (Anderson 1871) and some very interesting small tree frog species ( probably Philautus sp. but more scientific research a necessary).

The next days we travel along the Myanmar border and stay for one night in Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son province, there was many hill tribes and we see some woman of the ethnic group Lisu. The nighttime was also very cool with 8-10 degree Celsius but some moths are still coming to the light trap.

Then we travel more southwards along the border of Myanmar and stay for one night at a river junction near Mae Ngao NP. There we make a nice boots trip on the river and at nighttime we look for some interesting moths at the light trap. One large Dobsonfly (Acanthacorydalis sp.) came also to the light trap.

Then we stay for one night near the Doi Mussoe Mountain in Tak province. There was also very cool at nighttime about 5 degree Celsius and very few moths came to the light trap. On a local market we see some fried caterpillar of a bamboo moth, Omphisa fuscidentalis (Hampson 1896) from the family Crambidae.

The last day from our trip we visit the ancient city of Sukhothai, this was a early kingdom in northern Thailand from 1238 till 1438. Now is it a UNESCO World Heritage historical park.
